1969 hatte der holländische Physiker Klaas Compaan erstmals die Idee der Compact Disc. Er entwickelte zusammen mit seinem Kollegen Piet Kramer, ausgehend von der Technologie der Hologramme, um 1970 erstmals einen Prototyp einer gepreßten Glasplatte mit einer Reihe von 1 cm großen Schwarzweißbildern, die auf einen Bildschirm projeziert werden konnten.
